Homes that have been insulated with spray foam are some of the most efficient and comfortable homes built in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. To clarify, when spray foam insulation is installed properly, these homes out perform homes with traditional insulation.
There are two basic types of spray foam insulation: Open cell and closed cell. Spray foam provides both parts of the building envelope – the insulation and the air barrier. The building envelope surrounds the living space and needs to be directly next to the air barrier.
Unfortunately, many times spray foam is not thick enough. It’s pretty easy to tell if the insulation is effective. Walk into an attic space in the heat of the summer. If it’s hot in there, there isn’t enough insulation. Open cell and closed cell spray foam have different R values. It’s good to know what those R-values are and identify how many inches of spray foam you need to reach that desired R value. The coverage needs to be consistent throughout the space because the under-insulated areas will allow a lot of heat/cold through.
